The Central Cemetery Sanok (Polish: Centralny Cmentarz Komunalny w Sanoku ) is the largest communal burial place in the Polish city of Sanok , which was built in 1894 by the architect Władysław Beksiński.

The central cemetery on what was then the Tatra Reichsstrasse replaced the old cemetery on Vorstadtstrasse, now Rymanowska Street . The central cemetery is located west of the city center under Glinice Hill and is nine hectares in size.

history

The cemetery in the suburbs on Matejki Street was moved as early as 1790 and expanded in 1857. The oldest Roman Catholic parish cemetery was behind the Church of St. Michael in the central district of Sanok, which was closed in 1784. In 1895, a new cemetery was inaugurated in the immediate vicinity of the old cemetery . Some of the graves are the work of well-known architects, including Schimsers, Kobers, Julian Markowski, Ludwik Tyrowicz, and sculptors such as Stanisław Piątkiewicz, Wojciech Wojtowicz, Józef Aszklar and others.

In the cemetery there are funerals of the participants in the November Uprising , January Uprising , fallen soldiers of the First World War , members of the Polish Legions and participants of the Second World War , including soldiers of September 1939, victims of the Hitler crimes, Russian soldiers from the time of the occupation of Sanok 1944. After 1945 many graves and monuments were destroyed.

In 2010 a “committee for the care of the cemeteries” was founded, which collected money for the renovation of tombs of historical value, for example an occasional annual offering.
