Hermann Zillig
Hermann Zillig (born April 21, 1893 in Würzburg ; † October 16, 1952 in Bernkastel-Kues ) was a German viticulture scientist and director of viticulture at the Reich Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry .
Life
Zillig attended grammar school in Würzburg and graduated from high school in 1912 and studied natural sciences at the University of Würzburg . In 1919, Zillig founded the Franconian Museum of Natural History in Würzburg. In 1920 he was at the University of Würzburg with a thesis on forms in the anthers brand Ustilago violacea Fuck to the Dr. phil is doing his doctorate and at the same time passed the state examination for higher education. After a short time as assistant to Hans Kniep at the Botanical Institute, he got a position at the Biological Reichsanstalt für Agriculture and Forestry in 1921 and built a branch of the same in Trier . In 1925 he founded the German Wine Museum in Trier (dissolved in 1940), which he ran on an honorary basis until 1937.
The branch of the Biological Reichsanstalt moved to Bernkastel-Kues in 1926, where its own test vineyards were set up and Zillig was director until his death. In Bernkastel-Kues, especially vine diseases and vine pests and their control were researched. A particular achievement of Zillig was the establishment of a vine protection service for the Moselle. In 1933, at Zillig's suggestion, a weather observation station was built on the Erbeskopf .
Zillig has published (partly with colleagues) over 100 original articles in specialist journals and worked on manuals such as the “ Handbuch der Pflanzenkrankheiten ” by Paul Sorauer and Otto Appel , the “ Weinbau-Lexikon ” by Karl Müller or Fritz Goldschmidts “ Deutschlands Weinbauorte und Vineyards ".
family
Zillig's father was the teacher and educational writer Peter Zillig , his brother was Winfried Zillig , composer, music theorist and conductor. His son Wolfram was one of the founders of molecular genetics and director at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried.

- In Bernkastel-Kues a street was named after Hermann Zillig.
