Life

Hans Kniep studied medicine at the University of Kiel , then botany in Jena with Ernst Stahl and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. During his time in Jena, he also studied with Robert Chodat at the University of Geneva .

From 1905 he worked as an assistant for Wilhelm Pfeffer at the University of Leipzig and was also on a longer research stay in Bergen ( Norway ), where he worked on the germination biology and physiology of algae ( Fucus ). From 1907 he was a private lecturer at the University of Freiburg .

In 1911 Kniep was appointed associate professor at the University of Strasbourg , in 1914 as full professor at the University of Würzburg , where he was dean and from 1923 to 1924 rector of the university. From 1924 (as the successor to Gottlieb Haberlandt ) he worked as a full professor for plant physiology at the University of Berlin . In 1923 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Research areas

Kniep mainly worked on plant physiology on chemotaxis , photosynthesis and nutrition of marine plants and on the sexuality of lower plants.

Among other things, his work on the cytology and genetics of fungi , especially the Basidiomycetes , is significant . Among other things, he investigated the development of the pair nucleus stages in the Hymenomycetes and the conditions for buckling in the Basidiomycetes.

From 1916 he was editor of the journal for botany.
