Richard Harder (biologist)

Richard Harder (born March 21, 1888 in Hamburg , † December 2, 1973 in Göttingen ) was a German botanist and university professor .

Live and act

Harder submitted his dissertation in 1911 and his habilitation thesis in 1917 . In 1922 he was appointed professor of botany in Tübingen and in 1923 in Stuttgart . During his time in Stuttgart, the botanical garden there, which had to be relocated as a result of the new building of the state theater, could be laid out near Wilhelma . In 1918 he married Hilda Plätzer, their son Jochen was born in 1924 and their daughter Elisabeth in 1928. In 1932 Harder accepted a professorship in Göttingen and stayed there until his death in 1973.

After the handover of power to the National Socialists, Harder signed the confession of the German professors to Adolf Hitler , an election call for November 11, 1933. In the same year he was elected a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

His main areas of work were the systematics , physiology and ecology of plants. For many years he worked on the standard work for university students of botany, the university textbook “ Strasburger ”. So he draws in the 17th – 28th Edition (1928–1962) responsible for the “ Lower Plants ” section .
