The central department store "ZUM" ( Ukrainian Центра́льний універса́льний магази́н (ЦУМ) Z entralnyj U niwersalnyj M ahasyn ) is a historically important department store building in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

location

The "ZUM" is on the corner of Khreshchatyk - Bohdan-Khmelnyzkyj Street ( Ву́л. Богда́на Хмельни́цького ) opposite the Khreschtschatyk 25 building and next to the Kiev City Council building in the center of Kiev.

history

The "ZUM" department store is a public building built between 1936 and 1939. It is architecturally close to Constructivism and was opened on May 1, 1939.

During the war, the shop was looted and the building itself was little damaged. The building has been renovated since 2012, with the sales area being doubled to up to 37,740 m².

For the 80th anniversary of the ZUM , the documentary ZUM 80 was made , in which cultural workers, historians, designers and representatives of the current team discover the secrets of their work and explain how the Kiev-based ZUM became what it is today. The idea for the film came up in February 2019 after the decision was made to recreate one of its shop windows on the occasion of the department store anniversary and archive photos and memories of former employees from the mid-1960s were discovered, which were then processed using multimedia.
