Central Association of Austrian Consumer Associations

The Central Association of Austrian Consumers 'Associations (ZÖK) emerged in 1904 from the Association of Workers' Acquisitions and Economic Cooperatives , which was founded in 1901.

history

After a meeting in Kreuznach in Germany in 1902 resulted in the expulsion of 98 politically left-wing workers' cooperatives from the “General Association of Self-Help-Based German Acquisitions and Business Cooperatives”, a similar development emerged in the Danube Monarchy at the turn of the century the demarcation and exclusion from the Schulze-Delitz direction. Between 1890 and 1910 the consumer cooperatives in the Austrian half of the empire quintupled their sales and membership. The majority of these were foundations in the social democratic environment . This popular movement of workers' consumer cooperatives, which is difficult to control, also involved risks, and there were clear reservations in the SDAP at first.

In 1903 the Austrian Cooperative Auditing Act came into force, which provided for regular mandatory audits for cooperatives every two years by independent auditors. The Association of Workers' Acquisitions and Economic Cooperatives was renamed the Central Association of Austrian Consumers' Associations (ZÖK) based in Vienna on the association day attended by 148 cooperatives on September 3 and 4, 1904 in the Favoriten workers' hostel . Most of Austria's consumer cooperatives were part of the ZÖK.

In 1904 the consumer association already belonged to 220 consumer cooperatives and consumer associations. By 1913 it was 70 percent of all Austrian consumer cooperatives. Only bourgeois consumer cooperatives remained in the general association, such as the important first Viennese consumer association . However, the establishment of the new auditing association did not lead directly to commercial success. With the support of the Social Democratic Party, five financially badly troubled consumer cooperatives had to be merged to form the Vorwärts consumer cooperative . The establishment of the large purchasing company GöC and that of the Hammerbrotwerke also put a strain on the sector.

In 1913, Karl Renner , the then chairman of the consumer association, had to react to the financially strained situation of the consumer cooperatives by founding the credit association of Austrian workers 'associations (forerunner of the workers' bank founded in 1923 and today's bank for work and economy ). This association pooled union funds, funds from consumer cooperatives and social democratic organizations.

In 1917, the Central Association and the Großeinkaufsgesellschaft für Österreichische Consumvereine (GÖC), founded in 1905, moved into the representative Dietmann house planned by Josef Kornhäusel in Praterstrasse 8.Karl  Renner and his wife Luise lived in this house from 1918 to 1934 (on 11 December 1946 blown up as a war ruin).

The organ of the association was Der Konsumverein (1903/04: Arbeiter-Genossenschaft ), which appeared from 1905 with two issues a month (1st and 3rd Friday), existed until 1955, from 1919 under a title that was changed several times.

With the incorporation of Austria into the Greater German Reich in 1938, the association was brought into line with the entire consumer cooperative movement. The association chairman had previously been Anton Pohl since 1934 .

With the articles of association dated October 29, 1940, the "Ostex" Import- und Export-Gesellschaft mbH was created, whose task, among other things, was to promote business relationships between the central cooperative organizations of the Ostmark and the south-eastern states.

With the ordinance of February 18, 1941 on April 1, the association was transferred to the joint venture of the German Labor Front (GW) , Hamburg ( commercial register : GW production company with limited liability ).

The 1st Association Day after the Second World War took place on May 30, 1946 in Bad Ischl . Today's consumer association - revision association of Austrian consumer cooperatives - was founded there.
