The Center for Mental Health of the City of Vilnius ( lit.Vilniaus miesto psichikos sveikatos centras ; abbreviation VMPSC ) is a psychiatric clinic in Vilnius , Lithuania . The sponsor is the Municipality of Vilnius .

history

According to legend, a count donated one of his palace buildings to the hospital after the suicide of his close family member. The tuberculosis patients were treated here. In 1927 a psychiatric hospital with 120 beds was established in the territory of what was then the Sapieha Park. Until then, there were only small psychiatric wards in the St. Jacob and Antakalnis hospitals in Vilnius .

In 1930, Prof. M. Rose moved his Institute for Brain Research from Warsaw (Poland) here. There were only three such institutes in all of Europe. In 1933 the departments for nervous diseases were relocated from the St. Jacob Hospital. The facility became the Clinic for Nervous and Mental Diseases. In 1934 a department for the incurable mentally ill was opened in Kairėnai . The hospital then had 2301 beds. The hospital had its own center for family care for the mentally ill.

In the post-war period the hospital had 400 beds. The hospital has established itself as a leading center for methodical neurological and psychiatric help in the whole of Lithuania. It was also the basis of medicine and medical education. In 1985, the largest day clinic in Lithuania for treatment and support of mental health was established in the hospital.
