ZeroNet is a decentralized web- like network of peer users. The software is programmed in the Python language (programming language) and is completely open source . The development location is mainly Budapest . Instead of IP addresses , portals are identified using a public key (a Bitcoin address). The private key enables the portal owner to log in and publish changes that are then propagated across the entire network. When the ZeroNet application is used, it provides a local web server and enables access to ZeroNet portals via a standard web browser. In addition to Bitcoin - Cryptography ZERONET Tracker used from the BitTorrent network to peer connections between the participants negotiate. By default, ZeroNet is not anonymized, but users can hide their IP address using the built-in Tor functionality. Although the ZeroNet website and bittorrent trackers are blocked in the People's Republic of China, it is possible to reach the ZeroNet network, even via Tor, using a WireGuard tunnel, despite the Golden Shield project .

Work has been going on for some time to make peer-to-peer websites a reality. Thus, from The Pirate Bay to build a network proposed, as well as by BitTorrent Inc., which launched the proprietary Project Maelstrom. Another similar project is MaidSafe's SAFE Network, although it has not been widely used so far and claims are more focused on file storage. Another application, Beaker Browser, uses the P2P DAT file protocol to enable the creation, hosting and serving of websites without the need for a server.

As of 2016, there is no way to switch off a ZeroNet page as long as there are still participants who provide it. This makes such sites immune to legal attacks by third parties. By default, portals are limited to a size of 10 megabytes, but the user has the option of providing portals with more storage space, if required by them.

Creation and development of portals

Portals are called "Zites" by the participants in the network. ZeroNet supports HTML , CSS and JavaScript . Developers can also use CoffeeScript instead of JavaScript, but the .coffee files must be compiled into .js files. Furthermore, .sass files have to be compiled in CSS. Server-side languages such as PHP are not supported, although ZeroNet allows registration and login to MySQL databases, which are also distributed via P2P.
