Death by crushing with elephants

Death by crushing has a long and bloody history as a form of execution . There were a number of different means of crushing the convict, which varied widely from place to place.

Crushing has often resulted in death from asphyxiation or internal injury. This type of execution is no longer carried out by any government.

Methods

The most common method was crushing with elephants . It was used in South and Southeast Asia for over 4000 years . The Romans and Carthaginians also used this method.

Other methods have been used throughout history, such as placing weights on the convict. This method was mainly used in England and colonial America . It was mainly used for torture , but not infrequently led to death, for example with Giles Corey in Salem (Massachusetts) .

In recent times, in connection with acts of war, there have been various and sometimes systematic killings of prisoners , opposing fighters or enemy civilians through crushing in the form of being run over with tanks or heavy vehicles ( contrary to martial law ) .
