Life

Born as the son of Melchior Lotter the Elder , he followed his brother Melchior Lotter the Elder in 1523 . J. to Wittenberg. Here he worked with him to print the writings of the reformer Martin Luther and other greats at the Wittenberg University. In 1529 he moved to Magdeburg, presumably because of the pressure of competition from the Wittenberg printing consortium. Here he became the most important book printer in the city. The works of Martin Luther and other greats of the Reformation , including Nikolaus von Amsdorf and Philipp Melanchthon , were printed in his workshop . Numerous writings by Matthias Flacius also appeared .

The image of Magdeburg as a stronghold of the Reformation and “Our Lord's Chancellery” was largely determined by his work.

The city of Magdeburg named a street in his honor ( Michael-Lotter-Straße ).
