The name is a suitcase word from "Zet", for the letter "Z" (for Zbrojovka) and "tractor".

history

The Czech company Zbrojovka (translated: "weapons factory") developed the model series before the Second World War. After the end of the Second World War, she developed the prototype for the "Zetor 25". Between 1946 and 1962 a total of 158,570 tractors of this type were manufactured, 97,000 of which were exported. In the 1950s, Zetor was also producing motorcycle engines, firearms and typewriters. In 1952, parts of the production were relocated to the site of the former Ostmark aircraft engine works in Brno. In 1961 the tractors of the series unifikované řady I (German: unit series) were presented. The Zetor tractors of the 1960s were also widely used in Burma , Ghana and Iraq . In order to be able to manufacture more powerful tractors, the Czechoslovak-Polish Tractor Research Center was opened in 1962 on the Zetor site in Brno . In 1964 a cooperation with the Polish manufacturer Ursus began . The export figures rose steadily in the following period, so that Zetor built production lines in Burma, India and Iraq. More than 200,000 tractors were built there from 1964 to 1993. In 1968 the unifikované řady II was presented. In the same year a cooperation with the Japanese manufacturer Iseki began . In the following seven years around 4,000 Zetor tractors were delivered to Iseki and converted there for the rice harvest. In 1970 the manufacturing plant was opened in Iskandariya , Iraq . Tractors under the Antar brand were manufactured there until 1990 . In the form of a cooperation with Hindustan Machine Tools , Zetor tugs were built in India from 1971 to 1990. In 1979, 32,670 tractors were built in Brno, a record for the manufacturer. In 1981 the government decided to transfer the production of heavy tractors to ZTS in the Slovak town of Martin . In 1983 Zetor began exporting to the USA . Over 25,000 tractors were delivered there in the following years.

In the course of privatization, Zetor as went public on July 1, 1990. The tractor production was split off. Zbrojovka himself, on the other hand, concentrated again on arms production. From 1993 Zetor manufactured the tractors of the John Deere 2000 series for John Deere . These tractors were primarily intended for the market in South America. In June 2002 the Slovakian HTC Holding became the owner of the company.

Today the company "Zetor as" has, besides the main location in the Czech Republic, branches in Germany , Finland , France, Great Britain, Ireland, North America and Poland. The German branch operates as "Zetor Deutschland GmbH".

The foundry Slévárna Zetor as of the Zetor company, based in Brno, was taken over by Heunisch-Guss in the summer of 2006 and renamed Slévárna Heunisch Brno sro.
