Zhang Yi (civil administrator)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zhang Yi ( Chinese  張 裔 ), court name (Zi) Boyi ( 君 嗣 , * 167 ?; † 230 ) was a civil administrator of the Chinese Shu Han dynasty.

Originally he served the governor and warlord Liu Zhang in Sichuan . During the invasion of Liu Bei in 211, Liu Zhang transferred him to Deyang to fend off Liu Bei. However, Zhang Yi could not assert himself and submitted to the conqueror after his defeat by Liu Bei's general Zhang Fei . He quickly rose to civil administration under the new master and was praised by strategist Zhuge Liang as one of Liu Zhang's most capable men. Around the year 216 he was sent as an administrator to suppress several uprisings of minor warlords in Nanzhong , but lost the fight and was captured. The rebels sent Zhang Yi to see the warlord Sun Quan , who imprisoned him.

After Liu Bei's death in 223, Shu Han and Sun Quan (Wu) tried to renew their old alliance. Zhuge Liang sent his officer Deng Zhi to Sun Quan to act as an ambassador, and also instructed him to obtain Zhang Yi's release. After Sun Quan received the ambassador, he had Zhang Yi brought and was impressed with his knowledge and demeanor. He let them both go but later regretted the decision and sent troops to bring Zhang Yi back. Deng Zhi and Zhang Yi reached the Shu Han border just in time and escaped the persecutors.
