biography

Zhang was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1978 for a homicide but was released early in 1997.

In December 2011, the police filed a case in which Zhang tried to strangle a 17-year-old woman with a belt. Zhang was able to excuse himself that it was a rude joke, and the incident had no further consequences.

The series of murders

Between March 2008 and April 2012, Zhang himself testified, he strangled a total of 11 victims with bare hands or a string in poorly visible places in Nanmen Village, near the Chinese city of Kunming , and then took their bodies to his home to be killed to cut them up.

As child disappearances increased, their parents often believed they had been kidnapped by illegal brickworkers.

It is believed that in the meantime, Zhang persuaded unsuspecting customers to buy the meat of his victims as supposed ostrich meat. He also reportedly ate the meat of his victims himself and fed it to his dogs.

Arrest, sentencing and execution

On June 9, 2012, the police investigated the disappearance of Han Yao, a 19-year-old boy, and found his bank and phone cards in Zhang's house. He was taken into custody shortly thereafter.

During a search of his home, the police found human eyeballs in wine bottles and pieces of human flesh that had been hung up to dry.

Zhang was tried in the People's Court in Yunnan Province and found guilty of the willful killing of 11 people in July 2012 and sentenced to death . His execution took place on January 10, 2013.
