Zhao , King of Zhou or Chao, King of Chou ( Chinese : 周昭 王; Pinyin : Zhōu Zhāo Wáng ) was the fourth king of the Chinese Zhou dynasty . He ruled from 977 BC. BC to 957 BC Chr.

Life

Zhao was the son of King Kang , who gave him the name Xia (瑕, xiá). Kang had successfully expanded the Zhou territory northwards. After his death, Xia ascended the throne in 977 BC. Under the name Zhao. During his reign he tried to expand the Zhou rule south. Numerous inscriptions on bronze ritual vessels found during excavations suggest that King Zhao's southern campaign against Chu was associated with high hopes. However, the bamboo annals report that the sky darkened greatly and the pheasants and hares were shocked when the entire Six Western Armies on the Han River were destroyed by the forces of Chu. King Zhao was killed in the fighting. This destroyed the main royal force, and the Zhou would never fully recover from this loss.
