Xiao (Zhou King)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Xiao , King of Zhou or Hsiao, King of Chou ( Chinese : 周孝王; Pinyin : Zhōu Xìao Wáng ) was the eighth king of the Chinese Zhou dynasty . He probably ruled from 872 BC. BC to 866 BC Chr.

Life

Along with Gong , Yih and Yi, Xiao is one of those kings about whose reign only very little is known. Xiao was the uncle of his predecessor Yih, who the bamboo annals say that he left the capital Zongzhou and went to Huaili in the 15th year of his reign . Xiao Yih probably ousted her power, forced her to flee and ascended the throne himself. This irregular succession to the throne would explain the annotations in the chronicles as to why the Zhou loyal Lords had to reinstate Yi. It would also explain why the inscriptions on the ritual bronzes from this period of the Western Zhou Dynasty use different royal time counts at the same time.
