Zhonghua Shuju

Zhonghua Shuju ( Chinese  中华书局  /  中華書局 , Pinyin Zhōnghuá Shūjú ) is a publishing house in China with a focus on the humanities , especially on classical Chinese works. The head office is in Beijing .

history

The publishing house was founded in January 1912 by the teacher Lufei Kui in Shanghai . With the aim of serving the "enlightenment of the people", textbooks and generally understandable works on science and culture were initially published. The publishing house thus contributed to the promotion of modern education and quickly developed into a modern company. The publications covered a wide range of books on China, on social and natural sciences, from ancient times to the present.

In 1958, Zhonghua became a publishing house for ancient and modern classics in the humanities. Since then, Zhonghua has published a large number of classics of literature, history, philosophy, and language, as well as important encyclopedias. Significant editorial achievements include, for example, the major publication projects of the 24 dynasty stories , of Zizhi Tongjian and Qing shigao .

Since it was founded, this publisher has published over 20,000 titles.
