The Ziegelschnitzerei ( Chinese  磚雕  /  砖雕 , Pinyin Zhuāndiāo ) is a common traditional ornament in China . With wood and stone carving , it is one of the so-called 3 decorative arts of traditional Chinese architecture , and is primarily used to design external components ( shielding walls , doors, windows, roofs, etc.). Images and inscriptions are carved directly onto a finished brick , not onto an unfired piece of clay.
