Type: Karst cave
Discovery: 2015
Overall length: 70 m

The Ziegenburghöhlen are three closely neighboring caves in the Wuppertal city area.

Location and description

The goat castle cave I, goat castle cave II and goat castle cave III are located at the western foot of the Hardtberg in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal . In the Hardtberg there are also the Hardthöhlen (the upper, lower and the lowest Hardhöhlen), this cave system is the largest in the Rhineland . The outcrop , in which the entrances to the Ziegenburg caves are located, is at the confluence of Hardtstrasse and Neuenteich. The Hardtstraße bends here immediately at the confluence to the south and leads up the Hardtberg in an incline. It is named after the former neighboring residential area Ziegenburg , after which a Ziegenburgstraße was named in 1874. From 1901 this street, which lies above the slope on the outcrop, is called Ziegenburg. This outcrop is where the limestone of the approx. 385 million year old reef of the Hardtberg is directly exposed. Directly above the cave Goat castle I is a sandstone layer .

The Ziegenburghöhle I contains a main passage that continues in an easterly direction. From this three corridors go south. The entire length was measured at 70 m. In the event of a fall, probably due to a malfunction, the investigation could not be continued. Afterwards, the Ziegenburg Cave II was explored, where the heavy silting caused difficulties. First the explored length was 8 m, later it was explored down to 10 m. The Ziegenburg Cave III was explored up to 7 m in early January 2016 and up to 18 m in July.

The caves have ventilation but are not connected to each other.

history

The working group Kluterthöhle e. V. (AKKH) carried out the first excavations in September 2015 and discovered the first cave, the goat castle cave I. Subsequently, the goat castle cave II and goat castle cave III were explored and secured against unauthorized entry. The explorations were continued throughout 2016 and the area leased to the AKKH with the geotope was secured with a wooden fence.
