History and name derivation

The policy of Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel was aimed at ensuring that his territory overcame the consequences of the Thirty Years' War as quickly as possible . This also included the development of agriculture in order to secure the food needs of the population and the landgrave's troops. Karl wanted to convince the Schwalm farmers, who grew grain - especially millet - as their main foodstuff , to grow potatoes . In 1728 he invited them to a meal with potatoes and salad in Ziegenhain. However, Karl could not convince the farmers of his idea of growing potatoes.

Since then, the Kirmes in Ziegenhain has been celebrated annually on the second Sunday after Pentecost. Since the farmers are said to have particularly enjoyed the salad served in 1728, the name Salatkirmes was created .
