The lake consists of two distinctive basins, the Tiefen Ziest in the south and the Flat Ziest in the north. The flat Ziest has an area of 32.7 hectares. The deep Ziest is 45.3 hectares. Both parts are separated from each other by the Buchholz peninsula . The passage is about 50 meters wide. The lake has a total length of around 1.6 kilometers and a width of 850 meters (Tiefer Ziest) and up to 400 meters (Flacher Ziest). Both halves of the lake are poorly structured. The deep Ziest is a maximum of eleven meters and the flat Ziest four meters deep. The east bank is forested, while the west bank is mostly used for agriculture. The small settlement Nienhagener Hütte is located on the west bank of the Flachen Ziest . At Tiefen Ziest, near a bungalow settlement, there is a bathing area with a jetty and a heaped beach. Not far from the north bank is the Lalendorf district of Vietgest . The south bank is steep and culminates at 58 m above sea level. NHN high Seeberg. The federal motorway 19 runs west of the lake and the Neustrelitz – Warnemünde railway line runs north .
In the Tiefen Ziest lie two wrecks of aircraft from the Second World War . One was shot down and fell into the lake, while the second machine landed on the lake in winter and collapsed into the ice and sank. Attempts to rescue the planes using air cushions were unsuccessful in the 1970s. The wrecks lie very deep and are also sunk in the mud.
