Zilla diodia (mask spider) is a species of spider from the family of real orb web spiders . It is the only species of the genus that occurs in Central Europe.

description

Zilla diodia is a small orb web spider. The females grow to 3.5 to 4.5 mm, the males 2.5 to 3.0 mm. The back of the body ( opisthosoma ) has a light brown-white basic pattern. The rear part shows a dark leaf markings. At the front edge there is a characteristic T-shaped, rounded, white drawing, by which the species can be easily recognized. In between there are mostly dark horizontal stripes interrupted in the middle.

The front body ( prosoma ) is light brown, in the eye area dark brown. The legs have a light brown base color and are darkly ringed.

Habitat and way of life

Zilla diodia prefers dry locations, mostly in and on the edge of coniferous and deciduous forests and in bushes. There she usually builds her cycle network at a low altitude. The nets from Zilla diodia often have a very high number of spokes (40–50) and glue threads (50–60). Mature animals can be found in April to June.

distribution

Zilla diodia occurs in Europe and to the east as far as Azerbaijan . It is widespread in Germany and not endangered, but also not often.
