Circus child (Original title: A Son of the Circus ) is the 1995 published, eighth novel by John Irving , translated by Irene Rumler.

The doctor, originally from India and living in Canada, Dr. Daruwalla regularly spends a few months in Bombay to operate in a clinic for crippled children and to look for the dwarf gene - a genetic marker for dwarfism . The action continues with the discovery of a corpse on the golf course of Dr. Daruwalla preferred clubs. The doctor is drawn into the investigation.

Theoretically, the circus child is a detective novel, but the main plot is accompanied by several partially equal subplots. The Jesuit twin brother of Dr. Daruwalla friend of the actor John D. visits India for the first time and two street children are to be placed in a circus.

Elements typical for Irving such as grotesque scenes, sexual permissiveness and an ensemble of bizarre minor characters can also be found in Circus Child . The story progressing in the present is repeatedly interrupted by flashbacks in the form of memories of the people.
