Almoster Cistercian Abbey
The Cistercian Abbey Reus was 1287-1834 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Almoster (Santarém) , Portugal .
history
A lady-in-waiting of Saint Elisabeth of Portugal founded the nunnery of Santa Maria de Almoster in 1287 ten kilometers west of Santarém . The place name was formed from the Arabic article al and the Latin word for monastery ( monasterium , Portuguese: mosteiro ).
Like all Portuguese monasteries after the Liberals' victory in the War of Miguelists , Almoster Abbey was closed in 1834. The monastery then fell into disrepair. Today only the church and parts of the cloister and chapter house are preserved.
