The Cistercian Abbey Groeninge was 1236-1796 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Kortrijk (French: Courtrai), Province of West Flanders , in Belgium .

history

Groeninge Abbey had three locations. Groeninge I was donated in 1235 at Gut Rodenborch in Marke near Kortrijk. Groeninge II was created from 1265 by moving Groeninge I to a suburb of Kortrijk. Groeninge III was built in its final location in the city center from 1581 and was alive until 1797 when the monastery was dissolved and partially dismantled by the French Revolution . The remaining buildings were inhabited by the poor Clarissen from 1845 to 1978 . Then (between Groeningestraat and Begijnenhof) the nuns' dormitory was restored (until 1992) and museums (“Kortrijk 1302” and a museum on the city's history) were set up. The miraculous image of the Lady of Groeninge is venerated in St. Michael's Church.
