Cistercian Abbey of Kirchheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of the Assumption of Mary in Kirchheim was a convent in Kirchheim am Ries and existed from 1267 to 1802.

history

In 1267 the House of Oettingen donated the Cistercian convent of the Assumption of Mary for women of aristocratic origin and as a burial place for themselves , which was under the spiritual direction of Kaisheim Monastery . In 1802 the monastery was dissolved by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and fell to the Princely House of Oettingen-Wallerstein. The Gothic monastery church, which is well worth seeing, has been preserved as the parish church of the Assumption of Mary (Kirchheim am Ries) (renovated in 2001), as is an abbey wing with an early Gothic collegiate chapel and women's choir. The formerly rich monastery library was incorporated into the Oettingen-Wallerstein library and is now part of the Augsburg University Library .
