Cistercian abbey Leeuwenhorst
The Cistercian abbey Leeuwenhorst (also: Ter Lee and Ter Leede ) was a monastery of the Cistercian women in Noordwijk , province of South Holland in the Netherlands from 1261 to 1573 .
history
In 1261, two noble brothers donated the Leeuwenhorst nunnery in the vicinity of Leiden, not far from the sea, for the salvation of their parents' souls. Sisters from the Cistercian Abbey of Mariendaal (Utrecht) settled there. The monastery was under the supervision of Kamp Monastery . In 1574 the monastery buildings were destroyed by the Geusen . The nuns lived in Leiden under difficult conditions until 1579. Today a school and a hotel on the site bear the name Leeuwenhorst.
