Santa Maria de Valldaura Church

The Cistercian Abbey Valldaura was 1241-1461 a monastery of Cistercian nuns first in Olvan, Comarca Berguedà , from 1399 in Manresa , Catalonia. The monastery is not to be confused with the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Valldaura (in today's Cerdanyola del Vallès ), which existed from 1150 to 1169 and became part of the Santes Creus monastery .

history

Valldaura in Olvan and Manresa

The local noble house De la Portella founded the nunnery Santa Maria de Valldaura (from Latin vallis aurea "golden valley") in Olvan in 1231 , which was settled with nuns from the monastery La Bovera and officially recognized in 1241. Since the monastery fell into poverty, there were efforts from 1325 to re-establish it in Berga , which were successful in 1335 with the help of the king. In 1338 some of the nuns from Valldaura moved to the monastery Neu-Valldaura or Santa Maria de Montbenet (also: Santa Maria dels Palomers ). The nuns remaining in Valldaura were able to hold out until 1399 and then moved to Manresa , where the convent lasted until 1461, but was then replaced by a Cistercian priory of the Poblet monastery , which in turn moved to Sant Pau Ermitá (in Manresa) in 1465, where it was existed until 1699. In Olvan the monastery chapel still stands at the end of a street that Peugniez calls "magnifique". In Manresa, the Plaça de Valldaura is reminiscent of the former monastery.

Montbenet in Berga

In Berga, the monastery of Santa Maria de Montbenet ("Benedict Mountain ") existed with difficulties from 1338 to 1568. Then the convent was replaced by the Cistercian priory of Sant Joan de Berga of the Poblet monastery, which, like the priory of Manresa, was dissolved in 1699. There are remains in the vicinity of Plaça de Sant Joan .
