from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian convent in the Lehr (also: in der Leer ) was a convent of the Cistercian women in Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate from 1244 to 1580 .

history

In 1244, Benigna von Helfenstein , who was already in charge of a sister collection ( beguinage ), founded the Marian monastery “retro Lere” (“behind the teaching or empty”), which was supervised by the Himmerod monastery . In 1290 the Archbishop of Trier Boemund I von Warsberg consecrated the church. The monastery was granted indulgences several times . During the Counter Reformation , Archbishop Jacob III decided. von Eltz , the monastery buildings in the Jesuits wanted to settle in an absolutist manner the relocation of the nuns in the only two Augustinian monks occupied the monastery Niederwerth . It was only through the threat of excommunication that he succeeded in breaking the resistance of the sisters, and so the nuns changed in 1580 accompanied by Abbot John VI. from Cochem to the Rheininsel Niederwerth , where the convent existed until 1811. In Koblenz (Jesuitenplatz) the Jesuit Church stands on the site of the former monastery church. Parts of the long choir date from the time of the Cistercian Sisters.
