The Citadel of Sisteron (French: Citadelle de Sisteron ) is a fortress in Sisteron in French department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

history

The citadel stands at a height of 500 meters. Its current location was fortified in ancient times . Written evidence of a "castle" or "guard" from Sisteron can only be found from the 11th century. The citadel was built in its current form by fortress builder Jean Errard de Bar-le-Duc . Some of the renovations go back to Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban . She is on duty and has been blocking the passage between Dauphiné and Provence since 1209. However, the history of the building goes back even further. It was only in 1920 that the fortress was demilitarized, that is, it was abandoned by the French state as a military base.
