Zollverein School of Management and Design

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zollverein School of Management and Design gGmbH was a private educational institution for management and design that, similar to the Anglo-Saxon graduate schools, only offered continuing education programs. It was founded in 2003 as a non-profit GmbH. In 2004 she started teaching the MBA Business Design course. After conceptual and economic failure, operations had to be stopped again in 2008. Then the company was liquidated.

The Zollverein School was housed in the Zollverein-Kubus , a new building built for the company with public funds, adjacent to the grounds of the Zollverein colliery in Essen .

The Zollverein School's MBA program was designed to combine management with design. The target group of the Zollverein School were designers and business executives. The curriculum was divided into four subject areas:

  • Basics, Transformation & Methodology
  • Strategy & Marketing
  • Organization & leadership
  • Finance & Operations

The tuition fees for the 20-month Executive MBA course totaled 22,000 euros.

Financing and processing

The Zollverein School was funded 40 percent by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and another 40 percent by the EU - this was made possible by the designation of the site as a World Heritage Site on August 31, 2002. The remaining 20 percent of the 12 million euros in the building, which was officially handed over to the facility on July 31, 2006, was borne by the school itself. It was planned that the school would be self-supporting from 2008 onwards.

Since the beginning of 2008 it was known that the further financing and thus the continued existence of the Zollverein School as an educational institution was not secured. It had already been found in 2007 that the targeted number of students had not been achieved. In addition, structural inadequacies and high operating costs prevented the award-winning school building from operating economically. The students who remained at the end of teaching were taken over by the University of Duisburg-Essen .
