Zombicide, Pyrkon, Poznań 2015

Zombicide is a series of cooperative board games from Guillotine Games , each funded by the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter . The first issue was published by CoolMiniOrNot in 2012 . The first German-language edition was published by Asmodee in 2013 .

The idea of the game in Zombicide is to fight for survival in a zombie apocalypse that has to be classified in the present . In addition to the possibility of playing the game alone, up to six players can slip into the role of survivors. Players win if they manage to kill all of the zombies. They lost if they were killed by the zombies that acted according to the given rules. These rules are designed in such a way that an intermediate state with only a few long-term survivors is not likely. Players generally only have a chance of not losing to the zombies if they act cooperatively.

After the success of the first Zombicide title, various expansions followed. In Season 2 - Prison Outbreak (second base game) new zombies with special skills were added, while Season 3 - Rue Morgue brought out the new mechanic to let players compete against each other.

Due to the theme and the graphic representation of violence, for example with blood printed on the game board, the suitability as a family game with younger participants is doubtful.

procedure

Both your own characters and the zombies are placed on the board in the form of three-dimensional miniatures. The actual game takes place in rounds, in which first the survivors and then the zombies perform actions. The actions of the zombies follow simple, fixed rules. One of the most important is for the zombies to move towards the greatest source of noise at the end of a round. Noise is caused by players, for example, through the use of firearms.

The course of a round:

  1. Survivors carry out their actions (such as attacking, looking for objects, moving).
  2. Zombies carry out their actions.
  3. New zombies are placed.

These points are repeated until the mission is completed or all of the survivors are killed.

There are several types of zombies with different abilities and resistance to certain weapons. These provide playful variety and can quickly lead to a loss of control over the overall situation if you act without consulting your fellow players. The walkers , also known as standard zombies , have one action per lap (moving or attacking), while runners with two actions per lap can be significantly more devastating. There is also another type of zombie called Fatty , to which some weapons cannot cause any damage due to their wide, massive body. In addition, Fatty are always accompanied by an escort that includes two walkers. Finally, there is an extremely resilient zombie called Monstrum .

The players also differ in their skills. Examples are more actions per round, faster movement or camouflage from zombies.

Survivors have three actions per turn that they can use to run, search, or attack. Some actions such as opening doors or killing zombies cause noise, which is represented by so-called noise markers on the game board and attracts the zombies. The player has the option to search the area. He can find weapons and other useful items that can be used to defend against the zombies. Actions are limited by more or less realistic measures. So you can't search in a room or walk across a street when it is overcrowded with zombies. Also, only a limited number of objects can be carried at the same time.

After the survivors perform their actions, the zombies move towards the field with the most or noisiest survivors. Then new zombies are brought into play by drawing cards at points previously determined by the rules. The more zombies the players eliminate, the faster the difficulty increases, which means that more zombies appear on the game board with each new round.

Basic games and expansions

For Zombicide, several base games that can be combined with one another - referred to as Seasons based on TV series - and expansions are available. Seasons one to three can be played alone or in combination. At least one of the basic games is required for the expansions. By combining all three basic games as well as both extensions, the playing time for a game can be increased considerably (sometimes to more than eight hours). By combining several games, a larger number of players can participate in the game.

Zombicide

Zombicide was funded through Kickstarter in April 2012. The original funding target of US $ 20,000 was significantly exceeded in the end with US $ 781,427.
