Zouglou

Zouglou ( Baule : crammed together or garbage ) is a style of music that was coined in the Ivory Coast in the mid-1990s and made use of elements from other styles of music, especially dancehall or zouk . The University of Abidjan is considered the center of development . In 1994 the musician Didier Bilé and his band Les Parents du Campus wrote the first Zouglou pieces. The style reached France through students, where it quickly became popular, especially in the capital Paris . In 1999 the band Magic System hit the French charts with their song Premier Gaou .

The texts are written in various African languages ​​or colloquial French .

Well-known representatives are besides Magic System u. a. Sur-Choc , Meiway or Awa Maiga .
