Meiway is the stage name of the Ivorian musician, arranger and producer Frédéric Desiré Ehui (born March 17, 1962 in Grand-Bassam , Ivory Coast ).

Life

Ehui's parents are musical: his father, a sales representative in a local company, plays the accordion as an amateur , his mother sings in the Catholic parish. Both are also members of several music groups. Ehui started singing in church when he was nine years old. When he went to college at the age of sixteen, he made friends with a member of the college band Pace . When he accompanied him to a rehearsal, he ended up as a representative of a choir singer and as a percussionist. He quickly developed into a permanent member of the group. With Pace he won the prestigious podium prize in the Ivory Coast in 1978 . The group broke up shortly thereafter.

Ehui, now with the stage name Meiway, the dissolution of the group was an opportunity to found their own group: the Génitaux or Génitos . The eight group members won the podium again in 1981 . Tours all over the country followed. In 1985 Meiway moved to Paris and founded the group Défens d'Ivoire with African, Algerian and French musicians.

With the Zoblazo, Meiway has developed his own musical style by mixing traditional rhythms from southern Ivory Coast with electronic instruments and entertainment poetry. He also shaped the Zouglou . He is known by the nickname Le professeur Awôlôwô or Le génie de Kpalèzo . Meiway is an ambassador in the fight against AIDS in Ivory Coast.
