Magic System is an Ivorian music group that was founded in 1996. Since 2003 the band has also enjoyed success in French-speaking countries in Europe with their single 1er Gaou . In 2014 they became known in Germany for their international hit Magic in the Air .

Band history

The band was founded in 1996 by Salif "Asalfo" Traoré, Narcisse "Goudí" Sadoua, Etienne "Tino" Boué Bi and Adama "Manadja" Fanny in Marcory in the Ivorian capital Abidjan . Their Afropop, based on the Ivorian Zouglou , a form of Zouk , and their live appearances drew the attention of talent scout Claude Bassolet to them, and so they released their first album Papitou just one year after their founding . With the song Momo they had their first national hit. Two years later the song 1er gaou followed , which sold 40,000 times in their homeland in a short time and spread throughout Africa. With their third album Poisson d'avril they were successful all over the continent and in the Caribbean and had sold over a million records there in just a few years.

Producer and DJ Bob Sinclar brought the song 1er gaou to France as a remix in the early 2000s . It reached number 4 in the French charts and was also successful in the French-speaking parts of Belgium and Switzerland. The album for the song was in the Top 20. Only a little later, Magic System , in collaboration with the singer Leslie, was able to follow up with a second Top 10 hit and thus establish itself in Europe. On July 2, 2005, they performed as part of the Live 8 concerts in the Paris Palace of Versailles . From 2002 to 2009 they had a hit in the French top 10 every year. Two of them, Bouger bouger (2005) and C'chô, ça brûle (2006), were each awarded a gold record . With the song Même pas fatigué , recorded together with Cheb Khaled , they had their only number 1 hit in France in 2009 . It stayed at the top of the chart for eight weeks.

Two years later the album Toutè ​​Kalé was released . It became their most successful album in France with number 7 in the charts and a platinum award for more than 100,000 units sold. The most successful single was Chérie Coco with rapper Soprano as a guest, which reached number 2 in the charts. In 2012 they received a Kora All African Music Award in the Best Group category . Since Magic System sing in French, they had their greatest success in France and the neighboring countries, but as representatives of African pop music they were successful throughout Europe.

In the year of the soccer World Cup in Brazil in 2014 they recorded the song Magic in the Air with the well-known producer RedOne , who had already worked for FIFA in 2006, and the Moroccan Ahmed Chawki . It became one of the football anthems of the year, in France it reached number 3 and stayed in the top 100 for almost a year. In the Walloon charts in Belgium it reached number 1 and in Flanders and Germany it was also a top Chart success.
