Zoulikha Bouabdellah

Zoulikha Bouabdellah (born June 20, 1977 ) is a Russian-born, contemporary artist of Algerian descent. She lives and works in Casablanca and Paris .

biography

Zoulikha Bouabdellah is the daughter of the film director and writer Hassan Bouabdellah and of Marika Dorbani, former director of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers. She was born in Moscow and grew up in Algeria . She moved to France during the Algerian civil war in 1993. There she studied at the École nationale supérieure d'arts de Cergy-Pontoise and graduated in 2002.

Thematically, her work deals with the merging of culture and globalization, religion, language and intimacy, as well as feminism and the general theme of "women". Her work includes sculpture, photography, videos, and drawings. She often contrasts traditional sacred or cult objects, such as prayer rugs, with modern symbols.

Her art has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale , Bamako Biennial, Mead Art Museum, Center Georges-Pompidou , Brooklyn Museum , Tate Modern , Mori Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary African Art . Her works can be found in the Center Georges Pompidou, the Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art and the MUSAC Museum of Contemporary Art.
