Zubizuri Bridge

The Zubizuri pedestrian bridge in Bilbao is one of the city's attractions. Its name comes from the Basque language and means white bridge .

history

It was built from 1994 to 1997 in the Basque city of Bilbao based on a design by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava . It spans the (Ría del) Nervión , also called Ría de Bilbao, and connects the two districts of Campo Volantin and Uribitarte . The curved bridge is supported by an arch and is also known as the Puente del Campo de Volantín , the bridge of the Volantín field .

In the meantime the glass floor of the bridge has been covered with a plastic carpet. A less beautiful, but practical solution to the problem, as the glass bottom and the stainless steel bands that surround the glass fields were very slippery when wet.
