A sugar bowl is a can for storing sugar . It is mostly used with a hinged lid in gastronomy , but is also part of a coffee or tea service with a loose lid. This serves to protect against moisture and dust and usually has a recess for the sugar spoon or the sugar tongs . In contrast to the sugar shaker, the sugar bowl can also be used for lump sugar or rock candy .

Paul Cézanne used the sugar bowl as a motif in several still lifes .

The island of Negros was previously called the "sugar bowl of the Philippines " because of the extensive cultivation of sugar cane .
