A train cover signal (Zd) is a railway signal that is used to divide a track into several sections and to allow trains to enter partially occupied tracks on the main signal aspect.

A train coverage signal is similar to a blocking signal , but in contrast to this, it cannot display the term Sh 1 / Ra 12, but only the signal terms Hp 0 (“stop”) and identification light. In its basic position it is on beacon . If a train journey is to end at the signal, it must first be stopped by the operator. The track section behind it does not necessarily have to be occupied.

According to the planning guideline, it only has to be 6 meters away from the track vacancy detection limit in one direction, and 3 meters away from the track clearance limit for entries from both directions, whereby simultaneous entries from both directions must be prevented. Train cover signals cannot be combined with light blocking signals.

Entrances, the destination of which is a train cover signal, are signaled with signal Zs 3 code number 2 for 20 km / h due to the lack of a slip path (the 3 or 6 meters are neglected) in the area of the former Deutsche Bundesbahn . This is either already at the present main signal or individually shortly before the train cover signal. In the area of the former Deutsche Reichsbahn , signaling takes place with signal Zs 13 and additional signal Zs 3 code number 4 for 40 km / h. With the same technical and legal requirements, entry is permitted either at 20 km / h or 40 km / h, depending on the geographic location in Germany. A harmonization of this historically developed regulation has not yet taken place.
