Zukunft ERDGAS eV is an initiative of companies in the German gas industry and sees itself as the voice of the industry. The association wants to place the product natural gas on the market and in public as an “innovative, cost-effective and climate-friendly energy source”.

organization

The seat is in Berlin. The more than 125 members are companies in the natural gas industry such as gas traders, municipal utilities and network operators. The member companies include energy companies such as Uniper , Wingas and Mainova , natural gas producers and importers such as Wintershall or VNG, and transmission system operators such as Open Grid Europe . The initiative's partners are industry associations such as the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management. V. (BDEW) and the craft. The activities of the initiative are also supported by nine leading companies in the heating appliance industry. The association emerged from the merger of erdgas mobil, the former initiative for natural gas in the mobility sector, and Zukunft ERDGAS. Both merged in 2015 to form Zukunft ERDGAS eV, whereby all members joined the newly founded association. The aim of the merger was to create a common and strong platform for the product natural gas.

Board

Timm Kehler, Board Member for the Future of NATURAL GAS

Timm Kehler has been a board member since the initiative was founded. The doctor of mechanical engineering and industrial designer worked for many years in management positions at the BMW Group and came to Zukunft ERDGAS through the topic of natural gas mobility.

aims

The aim of Zukunft ERDGAS is to maintain the image of the energy carrier in the public debate and thus to prepare the ground for the member companies' sales activities in competition. In the political debate, natural gas is positioned as an important part of the solution to the energy transition. The association is promoting an affordable heating transition with modern natural gas heating technology, with power-to-gas technology as long-term storage for excess green electricity, and with compressed bio-methane or natural gas (CNG) as fuel for cars and liquefied bio-methane or Natural gas (LNG) for trucks as a sustainable and immediately available alternative fuel. In the transport sector, natural gas is positioned as a low-emission alternative to diesel. In the electricity market, natural gas competes with lignite.

Field of activity

Zukunft ERDGAS is one of its tasks to convey the advantages, potential and importance of natural gas to the general public and to decision-makers in politics. Furthermore, the member companies are also given specific support in their sales activities such as advertising campaigns and actions. The best-known examples include the “Raustauschwochen” modernization campaign and the fuel cell initiative. In addition, Zukunft ERDGAS eV regularly publishes studies on current topics of the energy transition, including "Practice and potential of power-to-gas", "Greenhouse gas intensity of natural gas", "Heat market 2050" and a market forecast.

Campaigns

Campaign # Klima2020 with an LNG truck and the ice model of the Reichstag

The association's public relations work mainly focuses on campaigns. This includes the annually recurring CO 2 day . The association celebrates CO 2 day every year on the day on which Germany has completely exhausted its CO 2 budget. That day was reached on April 3, 2017. In 2018 it is March 28th. With the “Climate 2020” campaign, the organization wanted to raise awareness of climate change and present natural gas as a more climate-friendly fossil fuel. Other campaigns are: "NATURAL GAS instead of Diesel", "NATURAL GAS - greener than you think", the "Raustauschwochen" and "Modern Heating". In cooperation with the weekly newspaper ZEIT , an annual conference on the subject of “Energy and Climate Protection” has been held since 2014.
