Little is known about the club and society. The club is described for the first time in 1796: The club is the oldest of the societies now existing here. It consists of 24 members who come together here for social entertainment. These gather in a private house in the old market, which the company has provided with furniture and table utensils which are peculiar to it. According to Klebe, the society that is one of the nicest in Gotha consisted mainly of businessmen, scholars and merchants. The annual contribution to the maintenance of the parlor and movables was 10 Reichstaler.

On December 6, 1826, Duke Ernst of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha took part in the celebrations of the club society on the occasion of his entry into the city. The Club Society was last mentioned in 1849.

The history of the house

The ensemble of houses, consisting of two half-timbered buildings, came from the middle of the 17th century. In 1715 the house in Rudolphi's "Gotha Diplomatica" is mentioned as the red lion corners . At that time it comprised the houses on Hauptmarkt 18 to 30. A house brand with a red lion adorned the facade until a few decades ago.

From 1870 to around 1918 the “Club zum rothen Löwen” was used as a special bar for Seebergbräu. After 1918, a single-storey rear building was added as a workshop for agricultural machinery. In 1926, a corner shop was installed and a furniture store on the upper floor. From 1927 at the latest, the Gustav Fischer furniture store was located in the “Rothen Löwen”. Around 1928 there were two dining rooms on the ground floor, as well as an anteroom and three guest rooms on the upper floor next to the hall.

Since about 1930 the "German National Handicrafts Association" and the "DGB local group Gotha" had their seat in the house "Zum Rothen Löwen", as well as the tobacco goods store Marie Koning. Two years later, the Meier Minz leather shop and the Oskar Roth car rental company were located in the building. In 1936 the guest rooms were extended by a single-storey extension in the courtyard. In 1939 the Margarete Lehmann grocery store moved to the corner store. In 1949 the inn “Club zum Roten Löwen” was last mentioned in a Gotha address book.

Around 1950 the “Leather and Textile Crafts Cooperative” moved into the corner shop. After 1972, the state-owned service company "Clothing" (headquarters in Gothaer Brauhausgasse) had its headquarters in the building. After the fall of the Wall from 1990 to 1998, “Kleid Gotha GmbH” was located there. During this time, oversized lederhosen hung on the main market facade.

Between 1998 and 2000 the auditor's office was located in the building. The building has been empty since 2000. The Gotha municipal construction company acquired the building in the winter of 2018. This had the building demolished in May 2020. The successor building, which will cost 3.5 million euros, will be very similar to the historic building, as the client announced.
