Hannah Witton

Hannah Witton (born February 19, 1992 ) is a British web video producer and writer. On her YouTube channel of the same name, she talks about sexuality, relationships, chronic diseases and disabilities. She uses her personal experiences to break taboo subjects.

Life

Hannah Witton grew up in Manchester and spent a year of childhood in Austin , Texas . She later attended the Catholic Loreto Sixth Form College in Hulme. She comes from a secular home where the topic of sexuality was discussed very openly. This influenced her later professional occupation with the topic of sexual education. Witton studied history at the University of Birmingham from 2011 to 2014 . After completing her bachelor's degree, she moved to London , where she has been a full-time Youtuber since then.

Witton was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the age of seven . In December 2017 she suffered an acute episode of the disease, which required an ileostomy .

Career

In April 2011 Witton published her first YouTube video under the name Hannah "Girasol". Her YouTube channel is best known for videos on sexual education , in which she addresses social attitudes towards sexuality and speaks openly about taboo topics. She speaks u. a. about masturbation, relationships, porn, LGBTQ +, consensus, menstruation, and body awareness. Your channel was subscribed to by over 530,000 people.

In 2017 Witton published her first book "Doing it: Let's Talk About Sex", which summarizes her experiences on sexual education. In Germany, the book was published in 2019 under the name "Untendrumherumreden". From 2016 to 2018 she produced the internet book club "Banging Book Club", which mainly discussed feminist literature, together with the British Youtubers Lucy Moon and Leena Norms.

Witton has been producing the weekly podcast series "Doing It" since May 27, 2019, in which she talks to various guests about sexuality and relationships. Witton was also a guest on several television and radio shows. In 2015 she held a TEDx Talk at TEDxClapham, and in 2018 she was interviewed for a The Times article about millennials and their sex lives.

In 2016, Witton started the video series "Hormon Diaries", in which she documents her experience with stopping the pill and the subsequent physical changes. She speaks to various collaboration partners about her experiences with menstrual cycles, hormones and contraception. Building on this series, Witton's second book "The Hormone Diaries: The Bloody Truth About Our Periods" was published in June 2019.

Since her ileostomy, she has been talking more about chronic illnesses and disabilities. She recorded her recovery process in several videos on her YouTube channel. For the 2018 Buffer Festival in Toronto, she recorded an hour-long discussion on disability, sex and relationships. It is also part of Crohn's & Colitis UK's “Not every disability is visible” campaign.

Awards

Witton was recognized for her channel as one of eight Girls' Champions of the BBC ’s 100 Women Campaign 2016 as well as the Cosmopolitan Influencer Award 2016. In 2017 she won the UK Blog Award in the Dating category, followed by the Blogosphere Award for Vlogger of the Year in 2018. Her book "Doing it: Let's Talk About Sex" was voted Book of the Year at the Summer in the City Awards 2017.
