history

The Richter family has been running the Lehdes village tavern since 1640 . The tavern was a Halbkossäthengut and at that time consisted of a simple log house , the usual buildings in Lehde. The house was home to both the inn and the dining room. Various additions were made later, including the Altwendische Saal made of planks and an ice cellar. In 1897 the so-called summer house was built as a lodging house , also as a timber frame construction. A laundry room followed in 1925 at the rear of the restaurant. In the garden stood a wooden, slate-roofed garden room with stained glass windows, which was open to the courtyard.

The Merry Pike gained national fame with the advent of organized Spreewald tourism at the end of the 19th century. The innkeeper at the time , August Richter , was very open to art and artists. Well-known painters were among the guests of the house and sometimes lived and worked here for months. The Görlitz painter Professor Woite recommended that brochures from the inn be sent to artists' associations in Germany. The idyllic motifs of the Spreewald landscape were particularly emphasized here. A large number of painters from home and abroad followed the call. Painters such as Carl Röchling , Eschke and Georg Estler left their works in a gallery that was originally set up next to the old-fashioned dance hall.

Since 1886, at Woite's suggestion, the inn has been called Zum Fröhlichen Hecht. Woite justified his idea with the "excellent young pike [n]" and the happy atmosphere in the house. The landlord also set up barges traveling from Lübbenau to Lehde every quarter of an hour as a Spree omnibus and organized many festivals, such as Venetian Nights , especially aimed at the artist clientele . August Richter died on June 17, 1933 as a result of a heart attack.

In 1975, during the GDR era , the old romantic inn was torn down and replaced by a new building. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on March 26, 1976. The old Wendish hall and the summer house were preserved.
