The Schwamendingen guild, founded in 1975, is the second youngest guild in the city of Zurich and represents urban district 12 and the Schwamendingen district . It is one of the guilds of the “new line”, which means that it was never involved in the city's political system, but was formed from the need to maintain a bourgeois attitude and an understanding of old Zurich customs, traditions and festivals.

It is the old coat of arms of the municipality of Schwamendingen from the 13th century, the silver wave pole of which, as a symbol of the Glatt, reminds of the river's once important role in economic terms.

In the Schwamendingen trade association, the idea of ​​founding a guild had been cultivated since the 1960s. When Schwamendingen became the 12th district in 1971 due to the population growth, planning could begin. Under the leadership of Anton Steiner, the president of the trade association, the «Preparatory Society for the Foundation of a Guild in District 12» was founded on July 2, 1973. With the support of the St. Niklaus Guild, they set out to look for the statutes, name, coat of arms and costumes.

In autumn 1974 the board of the Preparatory Society decided to apply to the Central Committee of the Zurich Guilds (ZZZ) for membership. Thereupon the St. Niklaus guild was allowed to invite the new guild on Sechseläuten in 1975 as a guest.

In the spring of 1975, some members expressed concerns about the speed and cost of founding the guild and called for a new board of directors. However, the proposed schedule was retained and the founding act began on April 12, 1975 at 5:30 p.m. in the hall of the Hirschen inn in Schwamendingen. The Schwamendingen guild became the preparatory society.

On November 26, 1975, the delegates' assembly of the ZZZ decided without a dissenting vote to include the Schwamendingen guild in the association.

Participation in the Sechseläuten

In 1976 the Schwamendingen guild took part in the Sechseläuten in costumes for the first time . The Schwamendinger wear the Sunday costumes of the peasants in the Zurich countryside from the middle of the 18th century based on a depiction by David Herrliberger from 1754. The costumes of the young guilds and the guild game are also based on models from this period. The group of riders wears the cavalry uniform of the Zurich militia according to the order of 1837.

At the parade, the Schwamendingen guild takes a wagon that represents the Herzogenmühle, which once belonged to Schwamendingen but is now beyond the city limits in the Wallisell area. This mill was very important in the life of the Schwamendingen farmers because they had their grain milled there for centuries. Incidentally, the name of the Herzogenmühle does not go back to aristocrats, but to a previous owner, a miller named Herzog.

The Schwamendingen guild in the quarter

In Schwamendingen, the guild is now an integral part of neighborhood life. It has around a hundred guilds, some contenders and young guilds. The monthly events usually take place in the quarter. Only the Sechseläuten and the Martini meal are celebrated in the city center, in the hall of the Glockenhof.

Every Sechseläuten begins at the Hirschen inn in Schwamendingen with a drink with the local residents. The guild also invites a school class from the neighborhood to Sechseläuten every year and has the flowers they receive distributed to the old people's homes in the neighborhood.

On behalf of the guild, the neighborhood association and the trade association, the Schwamendinger young guilds organize the Räbeliechtliumzug in the neighborhood every year .
