The phoenix are a breed of chicken of Japanese origin bred in Germany , which is counted among the long-tailed chickens . There is also a dwarf variant.

history

In 1878 the first long-tailed chickens were imported from Japan to Germany . In order to enable successful climate adaptation, crossbreeding with Old English fighters took place at an early stage . The variant with a simple comb, which is common in Germany, was called the “phoenix chicken” due to its similarity to the mythical animal depicted with a long tail in oriental art , but in Great Britain it is still part of the Yokohamas .

features

The phoenix are a slender and elegant breed that shows similarity to the pheasant . The head and crest are rather small, the back is long and horizontal. The face and wattles are red, the ear lobes white. The comb is simply shaped. The legs have a slate blue color. The long tail stands horizontally with shell feathers. Its length exceeds that of normal chickens, but due to the annual moulting, it does not reach the extreme length of the related Onagadori . Of the existing colors , gold-necked, silver-necked, orange-necked, wild-colored and white are recognized in Germany.
