The markedly incised terrain along the Zwettl River west of the town of the same name in Zwettl in Lower Austria is known as the Zwettltal .

Leisure and Tourism

In the area of the city of Zwettl, several leisure and sports facilities (ice rink, Zwettltal stadium, Zwettlbad, tennis courts, adventure playground) as well as a fish trail have been created along the river.

There are hiking trails, running, Nordic walking and mountain bike trails on both sides of the Zwettl.

Ecological importance

The Zwettltal is a Natura 2000 protected area. Protected in the area of the Zwettltal include the otter (Lutra lutra) , the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) , the common river mussel (Unio crassus) , the bullhead (Cottus gobio) , the priority stone crab (Austropotamobius torrentium) , several species of bat (Microchiroptera) , the habitat types common buttercups (code 3260, rivers with vegetation of the Ranunculion fluitantis and the Callitricho-Batrachion ), silicate rocks with crevice vegetation (code 8220) and the priority ravine and slope mixed forests (code 9180).

Impairments

On May 22, 2012, the Lower Austrian provincial government approved the construction of a bypass road that crosses the Zwettltal in the Natura 2000 protected area. A bridge with a length of 206.20 m and a height of 26.0 m will be built over the valley. The hillside forests were cleared for road construction.

In 2014 it became known that a forest path was to be built along the Zwettl in the Natura 2000 area, for which parts of the canyon and hillside mixed forest and rocks, which must be protected as a priority, would have to be removed. Due to the guided tour directly on the Zwettl, the aquatic life is also affected.

Several construction activities in or directly on the Natura 2000 area lead to increasing pressure on the protected area and the protected species and habitats (aerial photo comparisons 2003 to 2011).
