The Zwettl , including Zwettl River , is a left tributary of the Kamp in Lower Austria Waldviertel .
The Zwettl rises between Karlstift and Langschlag in the area of the great European watershed not far from the Kamp spring. More precisely: in the Reichenauerwald on the southern slope of the Binderberg (1015 m). On its further way it flows eastwards via Langschlag , Groß Gerungs , Wurmbrand , Jagenbach and Schloss Rosenau . The Zwettl flows in the same town Zwettl in the Kamp . It takes in 78 spring streams on its course. Gradient: 7.3 m per kilometer.
In the last section before it flows into the Kamp, the Zwettl flows through a strikingly incised terrain known as the Zwettltal .
The landscape in the course of the Zwettl river is due to its wealth of species and habitats worthy of protection for the most part as Natura 2000 area (fauna-flora-habitat area "Waldviertel pond, heather and moorland" and from the source to a little over the Half of the river length as part of the bird sanctuary "Waldviertel").
Large sections of the Zwettl have been preserved in their old river bed and are surrounded by forests (beech, spruce, larch, birch).
The forest area around the Klaus chapel, for example, which is part of the power arena of Groß Gerungs, is designated as a local recreation area. Within walking distance of Jagenbach there is a rock formation that is popularly known as the "Devil's Stone". Often one can see cup stones.
The following protected animals (according to Red Lists, status 1994, Austrian Federal Environment Agency) live in the vicinity of the Zwettl: Mammals: otter (Lutra lutra) , badger (Meles meles) , polecat (Mustela putorius) , brown hare (Lepus europaeus) ; Birds: Habicht (Accipiter gentilis) , Raufußkauz (Aegolius funereus) , Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) , Blue Heron (Ardea cinerea) , grouse (Bonasa bonasia) , owl (Bubo bubo) , pygmy (Glaucidium passerinum) , Neuntöter (Lanius collurio) , Black stork (Ciconia nigra) .
The flood in August 2002 caused considerable damage along the Kamps and the Zwettl. The water levels of the Kamp at the measuring point under the railway bridge in Zwettl were up to 581 cm (annual average about 170 cm). The flow rate at that time was about 76 times the normal mean value (6 m³ / s)
