The Zwinglikirche in Weesen in the canton of St. Gallen is an Evangelical - Reformed church .

location

The church is located above the west bank of the Walensee, elevated on the Büel on the western edge of the historic town in the immediate vicinity of the Roman Catholic Heiligkreuzkirche (Bühlkirche) , with which it shares a common cemetery.

Naming

The church is named after the reformer Huldrych Zwingli , who lived as a child in Weesen from 1490 to 1494 with his uncle, the dean Bartholomäus Zwingli . Presumably he lived a few meters away in the chaplain next to the neighboring Bühlkirche.

History and equipment

The Zwinglikirche was built in 1913 after the number of Reformed immigrants to Weesen, which has been catholic since the Reformation, increased significantly in the course of the Linth correction . The Chur architects Schäfer and Risch were responsible for the planning. The construction was made possible mainly through financial support from all Glarus Reformed communities. Until 1921, the parish was part of the Glarus Cantonal Church as an association with Mühlehorn.

In 1915 the church received 3 bells. The largest contains the motif of Huldrych Zwingli with the saying: "Put your hope in God, the calmer of all hearts!" However, the source of this imperative is unknown.

The church contains a Zurich Bible from 1589. It is probably the last print from the Froschauer print shop.

The sacred architecture follows the Art Nouveau style .

Church organization

Weesen and Amden , where the Reformed are also a minority in the diaspora , form a pastoral community in the Toggenburg deanery of the Evangelical Reformed Church in the canton of St. Gallen . The services take place weekly alternately in the Zwinglikirche and in the Amdener Bergkirche .
