Serntein (called Serenteiner ) came from Sarnthein in South Tyrol or from today's Nordheim, a few kilometers north . Cyprian was a popular given name thanks to the local church of St. Cyprian (of Antioch). The family was ennobled in 1465. His father Hans Northeim was secretary in the administration of the Austrian Archduke Sigismund von Tirol (1439–1490), before he and Zyprian moved to the ruler's office in 1482. Since 1490 Serntein was in the service of the Roman-German King Maximilian I (1486 / 93-1519), from 1492 at his court. There he took a central position in the ambulatory exercise of rule by the king as a "mediator" ( sollicitator ) between rulers and authorities and was protonotary and imperial council from 1496 and chancellor from 1509 . The royal court council order of 1498 strengthened Serntein's position in both "government bodies", the court councilor and the court chancellery.

Serntein was responsible for political and legal matters in the chancellery and court councilor, including issuing certificates and contacting the authorities of Maximilians' Austrian hereditary lands. In the latter capacity, Serntein received the office of Tyrolean Chancellor in 1501 from his predecessor Konrad Stürtzel von Buchheim , in which, however, he was represented.

Serntein remained in Austrian service even after Maximilian's death (1519). In 1520 he chaired the Erbländische Landtag, in 1521 his coat of arms was improved , in 1524 Serntein died.
