The system Feste Kaiser Franz in the 1880s

The Metternicher Schanze was part of the Prussian fortress Koblenz and belonged to the system of Feste Kaiser Franz . From the ski jump , which was completed in 1820 in what is now the Koblenz district of Lützel , no remains have been preserved after it was razed in 1920. It is named after the neighboring district of Metternich .

history

The Metternichter Schanze goes back to a powder magazine built in 1820 in the north-west of the fortress of Kaiser Franz , which was expanded into an independent fortress in 1830/1831.

Abandoned in 1890 together with the Feste Kaiser Franz system, the ski jump had to be softened after the First World War in accordance with the provisions of Article 180 of the Versailles Treaty . Only the blowing up of the war powder magazine was planned, while the blockhouse of the hill was to be preserved. The blasting work was completed on October 28, 1922.

The city of Koblenz planned the construction of recreational facilities for the people of Lützel for the former fortifications on the Petersberg. For the Metternicher Schanze, according to a plan by the municipal gardening authority from 1921, the construction of a playground and the establishment of a children's home in the former log house were planned. However, this had to be torn down as early as 1922, as it had been severely damaged by theft. In the course of this work, the detonation point of the powder magazine was also straightened. On January 1, 1934, the property and the neighboring Rübenacher Schanze became the property of the city of Koblenz. From July 1932 onwards, the volunteer labor service had the site leveled and prepared for allotment gardens.

Today the route of the B 9 runs over the site of the former ski jump. Remnants of the fortress are no longer available.
