Dangerous Neighbors ( Best Friends ) is a Canadian thriller by Michael M. Scott from the year 2005 .

Beth and Claudia are best friends and live in a small Canadian town. Beth has a son; she takes in her teenage niece Sophie. Claudia likes a comfortable life and is addicted to shopping. She has an affair with the craftsman Dan.
Claudia's husband, Wyatt, becomes unemployed after the company he worked for goes bankrupt. Claudia then murdered him in the hope of life insurance and fabricated an accident. She learns that the insurance has already been canceled.
Claudia tries to seduce Beth's husband Kurt, who helps her manage financial matters. When she realizes that her attempts are unsuccessful, she tries to get Beth out of the way. As a former nurse, Claudia is very familiar with medication. First, she injects the formerly alcohol-dependent diabetic with high-proof alcohol into her insulin injection, whereupon Beth is arrested as an allegedly drunk driver. Claudia gambled away the savings of Beth's family on the Internet in Beth's name.
Claudia kills her lover, who blackmailed her with a video recorded on her cell phone, by adding anesthetic to a drink in his car. She takes his firearm.
Claudia tries to kill Beth with another injection, but Beth realizes that the drug is a different color than usual. She then threatens Beth with a gun and threatens that she will not only kill Beth, but also her son, if Beth does not commit suicide. Meanwhile, Sophie finds the recording on the cell phone with the confession of guilt for the death of Claudia's husband and hands it over to the police. The police arrive and first surround Claudia's house. Beth uses the distraction and fights against her former friend. In a scramble between the two women, Claudia is shot in the shoulder. The police arrest them. In the last scene Claudia says - when her fingerprints are taken - she just wanted to help her friend .
